Hiking

Colorado's Rocky Mountains are world famous for their scenery and Snowmass is no exception. With such a vast amount of hiking trails too many to list, below are two popular ones to get you started.

Difficult Creek Trail
Don't let the name intimidate you -- this easy, close (to Snowmass) trail is not too strenuous. To get there, drive on Hwy 82 toward Independence Pass for about three miles; you’ll see signs for the campground on your right. Drive a half-mile down the campground road and park at the picnic area. The trailhead is at the lot’s southeast corner. This hike crosses rivers, passes through sagebrush, and takes you to several cabins left over from the late 1800s. 6 miles (round trip).

Cathedral Lake
This trail, though a mere 5.6 miles in length, is extremely popular and extremely rugged. It ascends through forest, alpine meadows and scree fields and finally opens up to the breathtaking, high mountain lake that is Cathedral Lake. The trail starts steep, but thankfully it levels off before reaching the murderous switchback section. To get here, drive west on Hwy. 82 to the roudabout, then turn onto Castle Creek Rd. Drive 12.2 miles up the valley. Turn right shortly after passing the Ashcroft ghost town on the left. Follow the gravel road a half-mile to the trailhead.

As always before you head out into the back country be prepared with plenty of food, water, rain gear and a plan. For more information contact the Aspen Ranger District or call 970.925.3445.
